Data Mining
There are several theories that state what poker really is. (It’s not just a card game!) Some say it is a people game that just happens to be played with cards. Others define poker as a game of information used correctly to produce a profit. This last idea puts a lot of emphasis on data mining, which is another way of saying “digging for information.”
What exactly do these two words mean? Let’s start with the accepted definitions from the dictionary. “Data” is defined as “individual facts, statistics or items of information.” This word can also mean a body or collection of such facts or statistics.
The word “mining” has come to mean “the act of extracting ore, coal or other minerals” from the ground. The word has its roots in the act of digging under the walls of a castle to attack the people inside. Now it means we dig for something that we think has value.
